Sloppy, grimy guitar work and vocals is what's always drawn me to bands like Crimpshrine, Fifteen and a lot of the (sometimes politically charged) early east bay pop punk bands. Crimpshrine especially, tend to cheer me up on shitty rainy days and actually wanna get me going on what needs to get done. I'm sure ya'll know enough about the band so I'm not gonna bother with an introduction. If you don't know anything about 'em, look it up.

Apache - Radical Sabbatical LP (Burger Records)

Raw grinding punk rock straight out of the hook laden era of the late 70's. Is this some lost KBD gem? No it's a bunch of boozed up/stoned out dudes pouring their sleazy hearts out through sloppy yet catchy guitar leads. I thought going into the record that the first 2 songs were fine and would have been suitable for a 7", skeptical of how they were gonna carry out their sleazy 70's punk anthems over 13 jams. They do it suprisingly well with only 1-2 throwaway tracks, the rest being record party anthems. Grab this LP, a case of beer, a pack of smokes and maybe even your glue bag. Stay sleazy with Apache cos these dudes seem like they know how to party.

Witchsorrow - Witchsorrow 2xLP (Rise Above Records)

Slowly you crawl out of this pit of despair. You are clawing the ground in hopes that maybe you can escape the soul crushing doomed out anthems from the righteous three piece known as Witchsorrow. Like their labelmates and label owners band's Cathedral, Electric Wizard and The Gates of Slumber, this trio churns out thick resin coated guitar riffs with a tone similar to that of the first Cathedral album. The bass is punchy and the vocals are droney all the while being backed by this crushing beast on drums pounding away at every verse and chorus. This is an extreme step up from their 2008 demo seeing as they've not only pumped up their riffs, but the way they pull those riffs off. The "traditional doom metal hammer-ons" are pulled off with perfection at just the right times for you to go "fuck yah" and throw those shreddin fingers in the air. Search this out, it's well worth a few spins.

It's been years since I picked up three Beyond Description 7"s from Schoolkid's in Raleigh. Actually, come to think of it, it was probably one of my first trips away from the shithole that was my hometown for most of my life. Those 7"s (one of which I'm sharing with you today) really brought me into this world of international hardcore in which I dwell today. Simply put, those records saved my life.

Anyways, enough with the nostalgia, and now onto some truly brutal Japanese hardcore. Beyond Description formed in 1988 and have been tearing it up ever since. "More Power To Your Elbow" is actually Beyond Description's first "official release" (following a plethora of early demos) and only release on the Desperate Attempt label (home to great one-off and split EPs featuring such gnarly bands as Hiatus, Concrete Sox and Apartment 213). They're still running 'til this day and just passing their 20th anniversary last year. A supposed new album is in the works according to one of their sites.

This record is a rager plain and simple. From the opening riff of the first track "Problem" to the insane drumming in "Rise" this record doesn't let up. There are no gasps for air and your ear drums are left punished and properly thrashed. Not as intense as what the band later unleashes upon us in the late 90's/early 00's, but it still tears shit up. Enjoy!

So recently I've had my server shut down due to a bullshit Terms Of Service violation. But, I also went out and purchased a new turntable and tape deck so I can finally rip ALL formats to my computer! So, I've decided to test my new record player by posting one of my most spun 7"s of 2007...

This is a fucking ragin' 7" that sounds like an awesome blend of late Articles of Faith/early Husker Du. Dark and pissed off hardcore punk. Saw them last summer with Total Abuse and Ugly Law (RVA sludgey hardcore) and they impressed me way more than I expected them to. I also included lyrics and full cover scans in the 320 kbps version. Enjoy!

REVIEW: Severed Head Of State

Since I plan on turning this into an actual print zine this summer, I figure I might as well post some reviews of records I've stumbled across in the past few months. This is my first shot at reviewing records on a constant basis. Hopefully I can stick with it!

Severed Head Of State - Power Hazard 12" EP (Havoc Records)

Severed Head Of State is back after two years, and they're shredding harder then ever! From the opening of "Death's Marionette" to the closer "This Final Scene...", SHOS blazes through 9 d-beat-esque ragers that sound similar to Lycanthro Punk-era Wolfpack. As per usual with SHOS, this release sounds like the polar opposite of it's predecessor (In this case I'm speaking of 2003's "Anathema Device" LP on Hardcore Holocaust) to keep things fresh. Now I know what many of you are thinking, "OMGZ WHEN MY FAVORITE BANDZ CHANGE STYLES THAT MUST MEANS TEY SOLD OUTZZZ!!!". No. This is not the case. Personally I think this record sounds better than Anathema Device, but that may just be me. I love Jack Control's Poison Idea type vocals layered on top of the insane drumming and the blistering basslines. It's kinda like throwing all the best bands from hardcore, d-beat, and punk into a blender and hoping that shit turns out alright. In this case it did, and this will probably become one of my favorite records of 2007. Chalk up another rager from Havoc!
